Heritage Woods at Lynnfield recently had great success at our Jazz Brunch and wants the summer fun to continue with a few suggestions of upcoming neighborhood festivals and concerts:

Wakefield:
The Wakefield Center Neighborhood Association will hold its annual Festival by the Lake on Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Wakefield’s Lower Common. In case of rain, the festival will be postponed to Saturday, June 19.
The Festival by the Lake promises to be one of the highlights of the Wakefield summer season. With over 140 talented craftspeople exhibiting, numerous local non-profit organizations in attendance, live music from the historic bandstand, delicious food, and 50/50 raffles, it promises to be a memorable day. The ever-popular children’s activities area will be run by Parents of Tots and will feature bouncy houses, pony rides, games, face painting and more.
For information about the Festival by the Lake or the WCNA, visit wcna.org.
Saugus:
Friends of Breakheart in Saugus will host the following free monthly concerts at the Christopher P. Dunne Visitors Center, Breakheart Reservation, 177 Forest St. The concert series begins with a performance from Old Time Radio Gang on Sunday, June 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. Families are invited to bring along picnic suppers and lawn chairs or blankets.
Its veteran musicians play and sing rousing renditions of classic melodies that recapture the mood of a unique period in American history when the popular music told “the stories from our hearts.” The band’s selections are richly varied – spirited instrumentals and train songs, gospel music, hand-clapping and toe-tapping tunes, and ballads of love and heartbreak.

Heritage Woods at Lynnfield will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo, Friday, May 7th from 5:30 – 8:30 pm.

Save the date and join us for a fun night of mexican fare!

Did you know….

The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico.

So, why Cinco de Mayo? And why should Americans savor this day as well? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.

It might be a historical stretch to credit the survival of the United States to those brave 4,000 Mexicans who faced an army twice as large in 1862. But who knows?

In gratitude, thousands of Mexicans crossed the border after Pearl Harbor to join the U.S. Armed Forces. As recently as the Persian Gulf War, Mexicans flooded American consulates with phone calls, trying to join up and fight another war for America.

Mexicans, you see, never forget who their friends are, and neither do Americans. That’s why Cinco de Mayo is such a party — A party that celebrates freedom and liberty. There are two ideals which Mexicans and Americans have fought shoulder to shoulder to protect, ever since the 5th of May, 1862. VIVA! el CINCO DE MAYO!!

Did you know? … St. Patrick’s Day:

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th, his religious feast day and the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over a thousand years. On St. Patrick’s Day, which falls during the Christian season of Lent, Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Lenten prohibitions against the consumption of meat were waived and people would dance, drink and feast—on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage.
The First Parade
The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place not in Ireland but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762. Along with their music, the parade helped the soldiers reconnect with their Irish roots, as well as fellow Irishmen serving in the English army.
Today, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people of all backgrounds in the United States, Canada and Australia. Although North America is home to the largest productions, St. Patrick’s Day has been celebrated in other locations far from Ireland, including Japan, Singapore and Russia.
In modern-day Ireland, St. Patrick’s Day has traditionally been a religious occasion. In fact, up until the 1970s, Irish laws mandated that pubs be closed on March 17. Beginning in 1995, however, the Irish government began a national campaign to use St. Patrick’s Day as an opportunity to drive tourism and showcase Ireland to the rest of the world. Last year, close to one million people took part in the St. Patrick’s Festival in Dublin, Ireland, which is a multi-day celebration featuring parades, concerts, outdoor theater productions and fireworks shows.
We @ Heritage Woods at Lynnfield hope you have a HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!
